The Waste Diet Challenge

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data, the average American generates about 66 lbs of landfill waste each month just from their own household! That’s about how much our dog, Rusty weighs. We have 4 people in our house which equates to 4 x Rusty, equaling 264 lbs of landfill waste each month! In the last two months our household averaged about 40 lbs per person per month, less than the national average. We’ve decided to challenge ourselves to only 8 lbs of landfill waste per person per month which equates to only 32 pounds of landfill waste for our entire household each month. (Our cat Stinky weighs 8 pounds.) We’ll be reducing our landfill waste from 4 x Rusty to 4 x stinky each month and hope to reduce a total of 2785 lbs of landfill waste by the end of the year.
How to weigh the trash
Take the Challenge. Answer the following questions and return it to challenge@thewastediet.com
1. Where is your household located?. How many people are in your household?
2. What is the estimated monthly pounds of waste sent to the landfill from your household? (Just use your bathroom scale to weigh your trash bags before you set them out on the curb - its easy!)
3. What is your 2008 Less landfill waste commitment?
4. (Optional) Do you have any clever ideas for waste reduction?

Each month we’ll reward a winner for the best idea. Each winner will receive the Waste Diet Stickers and a reusable shopping bag and will be posted on our website.

How to weigh the recyclables

RUSTY
This is Rusty. He came from the Scrap Metal Yard. He's a sweet dog, never barks, but likes to howl at the moon. He weighs 66 pounds and is our measure for the average monthly household landfill waste per person.

STINKY

This is Stinky. He's about 14 years old and also came from the scrap metal yard. He's the perfect definition of a cool cat. He's gray and fluffy, aloof but likes to be stroked behind the ears. Stinky weighs 8 pounds and represents our montly household landfill waste goal per person.
